Teacher Training at CERN

Educational Program for the Popularization of Physics

Specially designed program for early childhood educators, primary school teachers, and secondary school teachers.

GENEVA

100 meters underground, protons travel in a 27-kilometer ring- almost at the speed of light!

Physics is one of the most important sciences that humanity has managed to develop. The progress and knowledge we have achieved are clear proof that human curiosity and the thirst to understand the world are limitless. At the same time, Physics has contributed significantly to the improvement of everyday life!

In the Popularization of Physics Educational Program, which consist of Teacher Training sessions in CERN, we approach this wonderful achievement of the human mind in a simple and understandable way. We demolish the myth of “difficult” and “inaccessible” science. Through a series of Seminars, Experiential Activities and Workshops, we transform it into a living, accessible and effective tool for understanding the world around us.

*The maximum speed they reach is approximately 99.9999991% of the speed of light, which is about 300 million meters per second. At that speed, a proton could travel the Athens – London – Athens route (round trip) 60 times in just one second!

Program Objectives

Physics is not just for the few. It becomes accessible to all those who seek to understand the world.
The Creation, Mission and Operation of CERN

We decode fundamental concepts: Basic research, Elementary particles, High-energy physics.

The Accelerators, Detectors and Computers of CERN

An introduction to the unique equipment of the world's largest laboratory. Features and achievements.

Exploring the Heart of CERN

What are CERN's experiments like? What is life like in the neighborhood of the LHC, 100 meters below the surface?

Particle Detector Construction Workshops

We experiment, detect and record cosmic ray particles. We experience the process and the thrill of confirmation!

The Social and Diplomatic Aspect of CERN

How is the LHC connected to the end of the Cold War? CERN as a model for broader global collaborations with scientific, technological, and diplomatic dimensions.

CERN in Everyday Life

CERN's invaluable contribution to society: the World Wide Web, touch screens, PET tomography and the detection of illicit material transport.

Participation Information

Educators interested in attending the program are invited to complete the Participation Application.

Please read carefully the information provided on this page.

CERN Teacher Training Program

See in detail what the program includes:
+ - Program Duration

The CERN Teacher Training program lasts five (5) days. On the 1st day, we arrive at our destination and on the 5th day, we return to Greece.

+ - Transportation & Accommodation

Travel to Geneva is by plane, departing from Eleftherios Venizelos Airport in Athens. Teachers living outside the Attica region will need to travel to Athens International Airport.

Transportation within Geneva, as well as to other areas we will visit during the CERN Teacher Training, is provided by coach.

Our accommodation will be in the CERN dormitories, in double rooms.

+ - Training Seminars

Popular science lectures by Greek researchers working at CERN.

• Why does humanity need basic research?

• Why and how are the conditions of the Big Bang reproduced?

• What answers have been found and what problems are still awaiting solutions?

+ - Experiential Activities

Visits to CERN’s cutting-edge laboratories. An introduction to both the researchers and the equipment of this Global Laboratory.

Participants in the CERN Teacher Training Program will explore how collaboration among people from all over the world can lay the foundation for a better Society of the Future.

+ - Workshops

From theory to experimental confirmation: Visits to CERN’s exhibitions and the collaborative engagement of teachers in cutting-edge laboratories lay the foundation for knowledge and highlight the excitement of Discovery.

+ - Language of Instruction

The seminars, workshops and experiential activities included in the CERN Teacher Training are all conducted in the English language.

+ - Cost

To ensure the high quality of our initiative and to provide services that meet our expectations, we publish a call for applications for each CERN Teacher Training Program.

For the Educational Program on the Popularization of Physics at CERN, the cost includes:

• Airline tickets from Athens to Geneva and from Geneva to Athens

• Accommodation in CERN dormitories

• Breakfast and lunch at CERN

• Lectures by Greek scientists working at CERN

• Participation in workshops held within CERN

• Participation in experiential activities at CERN (and beyond!)

• Transportation to key destinations
